After your initial charges for Stunt Driving or Racing in Ontario, and after your roadside penalties of 14-day impound and 30-day license suspension, the next steps is getting legal advice or hiring a legal representative to assist with your court dates.

I repeat again - do not hire THAT company...

There are a lot of traffic defence "companies".  And some of them may sound familiar, or you have been referred by someone that knows the name.  Let me explain why hiring one of these companies can be incredibly risky.

Every interaction that takes place when fighting or discussing your Stunt Driving charge takes place between the prosecutor and an individual legal representative.  I repeat - an individual legal representative.  That legal representative may make the difference between you driving or you losing your license - for a year or more.  That is a lot of risk.  That individual has to understand the prosecutor, the law, the charges, the court, and all other factors of your case.  Most importantly, they need to understand YOU.

If you hire a "company" or a name, who is the individual representing you?

Calling a company or a brand name is fine, but speaking to someone on the phone is not enough.

- Is that the same individual meeting with the prosecutor?

- Or are they assigning your case to someone else.

- If so, have you spoken to the other person?

- Do they know you?  Do they understand your case?

- Can they properly tell your story to the prosecutor?

If you can't answer this, this is not a proper representative for your Stunt Driving charges in Ontario.

It all boils down to the individual legal representative handling your case

I cannot repeat enough times - your license is on the line.

The solution is simple.  Make sure you speak to the person that is actually handling your case.  Make sure that you get the right "feeling" about that person, because it is your license at risk, not theirs.  Do not compromise.  There are plenty of people to call, and plenty of choices for you to make the best decision about who to hire.

Your have time.  Use it wisely.

Nothing is happening tomorrow.  Take the proper amount of time to interview a few different representatives, so you can make an educated decision about who to hire.  Is the price right?  Do they understand your circumstances?  Do they speak well enough to convey your story?  Do they have a proper strategy?  Do they have proper experience?  Do they actually care about your case?

Now what?  I am confused about who to hire for my Stunt Driving charges

Getting your car out of the impound, and the high fees are just the beginning.  That is only the immediate roadside penalties for Stunt Driving.  Now you face even worse penalties in court, including a further 1-3 year license suspension.  Get legal advice - it's free - but can help develop a strategy to remove the harsh penalties of a Stunt Driving charge.

Why Office Location is Irrelevant When Choosing Ontario's Best Stunt Driving Lawyer When facing stunt driving charges under Section 172(1) of Ontario's Highway Traffic Act, many defendants make a critical error that could compromise their defence: choosing legal representation based solely on proximity to their courthouse. Jon Cohen, legal representative at Nextlaw—Ontario's leading stunt driving lawyer—explains why this geography-based approach is not only outdated but potentially harmful to your case outcome. The Virtual Court Revolution Changed Everything Since 2021, Ontario's court system has undergone a fundamental transformation that most defendants don't realize. Getting your license back after a DUI can feel overwhelming. As a DUI lawyer, I'll explain the steps required to get you back on the road. Understanding the Suspension Process Immediate Administrative Suspension The moment you're charged with a DUI, you face a 90-day administrative driving license suspension. This occurs before any conviction and operates independently from court penalties. Your vehicle will be towed and impounded immediately. Court-Ordered Suspensions Upon conviction, judges must impose minimum driving prohibitions: - First offense: One-year minimum - Second offense: Two to five years - Third offense: Three years to life The final duration depends on aggravating factors in your case. Ministry of Transportation (MTO) Suspensions The MTO operates parallel to the courts with its own framework: - First offense: One-year suspension - Second offense: Three-year suspension - Third offense: Lifetime suspension (reviewable after 10 yea...
